In this course, participants will receive an overview of the English speech sound system, including the ability to describe phonemes by place, manner, and voice. Functional and organic speech sound disorders will be compared, and current trends in the incidence and prevalence of speech sound disorders will be presented. The course will also cover sound acquisition and mastery, with a focus on phonological processes and evidence-based treatment approaches for speech sound disorders.

  • Identify phonemes based upon place, manner, and voice
  • Define both functional and organic speech sound disorders
  • Explain current data towards incident and prevalence of speech sound disorders
  • List current information regarding the age of acquisition and mastery of speech sounds
  • List the three common phonological processes categories
  • Provide three examples of treatment approaches to target speech sound disorders

Time ordered agenda:

  • 0-5 min: Intro and disclosures
  • 5-10 min: Overview of the English speech sound system
  • 10-15 min: Functional and organic speech sound disorders and incidence and prevalence data
  • 15-20 min: Summary of age of sound acquisition and mastery
  • 20-30 min: Overview of phonological processes and speech sound disorder treatment approaches
